Travel basics

How to choose a travel eSIM

Choose by the conditions you can verify: device, destination, trip days, included data, tethering and whether you need a phone number.

1. Check the phone before the plan

Look up the exact phone model on the provider’s compatibility list and confirm the device is unlocked. On iPhone, Apple says the carrier-lock status appears under Settings → General → About; “No SIM restrictions” indicates it is unlocked. Other devices have their own compatibility checks.

2. Estimate data from your real habits

Maps, messaging and occasional browsing generally need less data than video, cloud photo sync or laptop work. Check mobile-data usage on your phone before travel if available. Choose the included amount for the whole trip, not a vague “per day” guess, and turn off backup or auto-play settings if you want to conserve data.

3. Read the restrictions behind the headline

Check high-speed allowances, any fair-use or speed-management terms, hotspot/tethering permission, included voice/SMS, top-ups, activation timing and refunds. Plans sold with an “unlimited” label may still have limits on speed, tethering or use under their own terms.

4. Install while you have reliable Wi-Fi

Follow the seller’s instructions. Some plans start their validity when installed or first connected, while others activate on arrival. Check that detail first. Keep the QR code or setup instructions accessible if the seller recommends it.

5. Keep your regular line in mind

If you need bank verification texts, keep access to your home number and confirm its roaming fees. Internet messaging apps do not automatically provide a local phone number for ordinary calls or SMS.
